Padel on TV
Padel on the TV
Padel is growing enormously in attention and popularity. That also ensures that it becomes very interesting for TV channels to broadcast padel. Ziggo (the largest cable operator in The Netherlands) has therefore bought the rights to broadcast tournaments of the 'World Padel Tour (WPT). They will be doing this for the next 3 years. The number of viewing figures detemine the success and whether padek will be broadcasted more often on TV.
Padel on Ziggo
As indicated above, Ziggo will broadcast the international tournament of the WPT for the next 3 years. The top matches of both men and women will be featured here, so we can also admire toppers such as Juan Lébron, Ale Galán and Alejandra Salazar on TV. Ziggo itself indicates that is has opted for this because of the rapid growth, but also because the sport is fast and has a high enternainment level. It is a very nice step to see padel continue to grow in The Netherlands. Part of this will also be broadcast on the open channel and is therefor accessible to everyone.
Ziggo also offers a lot of tennis and also broadcasts other racket sports. Therefore, padel is a perfect addition to the arsenal!
I'm more than curious to see how the development and viewer numbers continue to develop now that Ziggo holds the broadcasting rights. It's quite clear that the sport is getting more attention and attracting new people, precisely because you don't have to pay for the streaming. At the same time, Ziggo could make life difficult for itself in the next contract negotiations, with other broadcasters also wanting to obtain the broadcasting rights and possibly being willing to pay more for them. Does this mean that Ziggo is only the hero of the TV industry for the time being and helps Padel to grow further or do you think the broadcaster hopes to build up a longer-term relationship and mutual trust with the WPT executives?
ReplyDeleteAfter three years there will be a new contract for broadcasting padel. I'm almost sure that there will be a competition in who is going to be the new broadcaster of padel after three years, because of the popularity of the sports. I think the WPT will choose another company to broadcast padel if they pay enough, because it is so new. I think WPT first wants to know different broadcasters ad theur channels and work with them to see how the number of viewers are, and after they will build up a long-term relationship with the company they know and is willing to pay.
DeleteInteresting to see discussions about media rights about a sport I only heard of for the first time this year. There seem to have been many deals going through this year with broadcasters securing the rights for the tournaments in their country and globally. How do you think this will effect the way padel develops in the near future?
ReplyDeleteI think padel will develop even more in the next years. As most people know, padel has become one of the most popular sports in a very short time, so if padel can be broadcoasted all over the world, it's popularity will increase even more and before you know everybody knows it, and want to watch it with some friends. Because of the increasement of the number of viewers, more deals will come up!
DeleteGood morning!
ReplyDeleteI play padel and I think it's a very fun sport, but personally I don't like watching padel matches. Even so, I believe that it can be very successful, since, as you have said, it is a growing sport and, in a very short time it has grown a lot.
I find it very interesting that it is beginning to be broadcast live, and I think that one of the best ways for it to be successful in the world of television is using Ziggo to have the rights, since they are specialized in racket sports like tennis, and that will give importance to both male and female padel.
In my opinion Alex, Padel is a very entertaining sport to watch. I think is more entertaining that watching other similar sports like tennis. Padel is much faster and has more amazing points than tennis, it has the advantage of the walls which make the points much more difficult to win. To finish of, this year the World Padel Tour implemented the golden point, which makes the matches faster and much more spectacular.
DeleteI honestly think that padel is a sport that a lot of people likes to play but not a lot to watch it, maybe it is because it is prety new but my opinion is that not a lot of people is willing to watch padel, do you think otherwaise?
ReplyDeleteI think with almost every sport, it is nicer to watch the game in real life, tan on TV, but I think people would be watching is, same as many people are watching tennis games. As Alex is saying in the comment above, broadcasting is one of the best ways to be succesfull and I think the more people know padel, the more people are going to watc h it on TV.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI believe that Padel is missing a superstar, or someone who is popularised for the skills. This will bring a new audience, as popular figures tend to bring customers that aren't massive fans. What do you think the sport must do to reach more audiences?
Thankyou
Hi Mateo,
DeleteI agree that Padel does not have a superstar, but we have seen some stars like Alejandro Galan or Juan Lebrón. Regarding your question, I think that in terms of audience it is complicated since it is a sport that is seen by those who play it, not like basketball or football, which even grandmothers and grandfathers see.
In my opinion padel is a sport of highlights, i mean, people nowadays prefer to watch quick videos and shorth lenght like in tik tok/instagram. So I think that in this society we live in people prefer to watch the best padel plays and points rather than watch the entire game that can be boring or there's just no time to watch it. What do you think ?
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Xavi, probably I would compare with the best highlights of Ping-Pong for example.
DeleteIn my opinion WPT is doing a very good job with their youtube videos and highlits as it is the material that most people are looking to see about the sport. Because we all agree that it is more entertaining to watch the best points than the whole match, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion padel is such an interesting and captivating sport given the fact that it isn't as hard to play compared to other sports such as tennis as well as it also being very interesting to watch Being a beginner is also fun and even more if you play with friends. Moreover, you can improve your skills rapidly therefore you wanting to keep playing more and more.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, padel is a fabulous sport. As is something you can either do with your friends a weekend, or you can play it quite seriously with people who practice weekly. So it's clearly a growing sport which in the future will reach high broadcasting for sure.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree with you Joan and I consider that Padem has the potential to continue growing in different countries.
DeleteHello, very interesting blog.
ReplyDeleteEvery day I am amazed by the exponential growth that Padel is having in the last few years. Personally, it is a sport that I have been practising for 5 years and I am very proud of it.
Do you think that Padel will continue growing so there will continue to be companies like Ziggo interested in it? Or do you think it is a sport with barriers and one day it will stop growing?
I am a padel fan who enjoyes a lot playing it with friends and I consider it to be a very promising sport for people who do not know about it.
ReplyDeleteIm glad it has started to be televised and I hope it continues to grow even more.
Do you think padel can be one day at the top level with sports like tennis or basketball?
From my point of view padel is one of the most underrated sports there is. There is emotion in every point, in every match, very entertaining plays....
ReplyDeleteI think in the next few years it will evolve even more on television and we will see even more padel.
